PM tells party members:

Maintain strict discipline and win trust of people

by Ananda Kannangara

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday warned all party members to maintain strict discipline and win the trust of the people adding that four UNP Provincial Councillors and Pradeshiya sabha members who have already been accused of murder, violence and corruption will be severely dealt with and expelled from the party membership at the Disciplinary Committee meeting scheduled to be held on Monday.

The Premier made these remarks at the UNP National Executive Committee meeting held at Mahaweli Stadium, Embilipitiya.

A large number of party officials and branch representatives from all parts of the country and also Members of Parliament, Provincial Councils and Prdeshiya Sabhas were present. The Premier also mentioned that a certain Member of Parliament too had behaved in an unruly manner on several occasions and he will be barred from all party activities until the judicial investigation against him is completed .

The premier also said he has directed the Police to carry out their job impartially and enforce law to the maximum irrespective of party affiliations."Even I too was accused by certain persons saying that I had several discussions with a group of LTTEers at Temple Trees recently,"

"So when this was brought to my notice I told the Police that I am prepared to make any statement in this regard.

Commenting on the current peace process, the Premier highlighted that the international community has highly commended the steps taken by the Government to bring a lasting solution to the war .This has immensely helped to stop the destruction of valuable human lives.

"This was clearly demonstrated with a huge grant of Rs. 4.5 billion donated at the Japan donor conference recently.

Wickremesinghe further said that the people in the country gave the Government a mandate in December 2001 with the objective of bringing a lasting solution to the war and prosperity to the country.

"As there were clear signs of fulfilling this objective by us during a very short period the same people gave an overwhelming victory to our party at the Pradeshiya Sabha elections held in 2002".

"But if any individual or party can offer an alternative to bring peace to the country in addition to the steps currently being taken by us we are prepared to consider it rather than ask the Government to continue with the war which ultimately destroys valuable lives. "However, I can say with assurance that neither the Government nor the LTTE will run away from the peace process."

The Premier also said that with foreign aid pouring in due to the progress in the peace process they were now focusing attention towards providing at least two million jobs to the youth within the next ten years.

Concluding the speech the Premier emphasised that the Government's only obligation is to bring a fruitful future to all countrymen through the already commenced "Regaining Sri Lanka" program.
