by Sandasen Marasinghe An elderly man who lay abandoned on a byroad after being knocked down by a van died on admission to the Colombo National Hospital last week . Police said that the driver of the van who volunteered to remove the victim, B. S. Benedict Mendis (51) of Wadduwa to hospital with the help of another person in the van had ditched the injured man by the road side at a spot in Waskaduwa. The driver of the van is still at large. Police further stated that although they traced the vehicle and instructed the owner of the vehicle to report at the Wadduwa Police on Tuesday the instruction was ignored. The vehicle bore marks of damage and the seat cushions and covers were new and seemed changed after the incident in an apparent bid to remove traces of blood. The incident occurred at Wadduwa junction, on the Galle road around 8 p.m. on Sunday (1st July).The injured man was taken to hospital by the Kalutara North Police after he was found abandoned at Waskaduwa. Santha Lal Perera (43) of Wadduwa who was near the scene at the time of the incident said that he saw a speeding van knocking a man who was crossing the road. Then the driver and another person who was in the van took the injured person lying on the road aside. witness was trying to locate a vehicle. However the driver and the other person volunteered to remove the victim to hospital. He(witness) was alert enough to note down the number of the vehicle. B. A. Nishantha Mendis (22) son of Benedict testifying before the City Coroner Edward Ahangama said that he had two other younger siblings. His mother was working abroad return.The City Coroner postponed the inquest for July 20. Dr A. Dayapala held the post-mortem. Evidence was led by Wadduwa Police.
