by Sandasen Marasinghe A young bowser assistant died on the spot when he was thrown away along with one of the lids of the bowser following a blast on Tuesday. It occurred as he attempted to tighten the leaking lid of the bowser at the L and T Cement Company premises at Nuge road, Peliyagoda. The bowser belonging to another company had been transporting cement powder from the Colombo Port at the time of the incident. P. Prasanna Costa (28) of Wellampitiya, another bowser assistant, said that he saw V. Nimal Samaranayake (23) of Botale, Ambepussa tightening the lid. He then heard a blast. He saw a column of cement dust rising into the air. When he rushed to the scene Nimal was found lying on the ground nearly 25 yards away from the bowser with eyes jutted out and bleeding ears. Flesh had come out from his ears and one of his hands was fractured. According to the evidence the cement powder is filled through three lids of the bowser and pumped out through an outlet with, compressed air. When they compressed air in the tank at the company premises to release the load the tank had had a leak from one of the lids. Costa said in evidence at the inquest held before the City Coroner Edward Ahangama that it was the duty of a bowser assistant to tighten the lids well after cement was filled at the port. W. P. Siril (53) father of the victim also gave evidence. JMO Dr K. A. S. Kodikara held the post-mortem. A verdict of accidental death was recorded by the City Coroner. Evidence was led by PC Wijesinghe (18183) of Peliyagoda Police. |
