by Rajmi Manatunga Four people were killed and two others critically injured in the latest in a series of road tragedies when a private van crashed into a tourist coach lying stationary near Usavi handiya in Mawanella yesterday morning. The van with six passengers in it was heading towards Kandy when the mishap occurred. The tourist coach was on its way to Colombo. The dead together with the critically injured were all passengers of the van while a Dutch tourist in the other vehicle escaped with minor injuries. Mawanella police said that the driver of the van had reportedly tried to overtake a lorry travelling ahead when it crashed into the coach which had been parked on the side of the road. "Among the casualties are two men and two women. Three of them had died on the spot and the other succumbed to her injuries at the Kegalle hospital," Mawanella police OIC K. G. Pushpakumara said. He said that the two only survivors of the van were in a critical condition. One of them who had damaged his spinal cord has been transferred to the Kandy hospital while the other is being treated in the Kegalle hospital. The police further said that the place where the accident took place has been identified as one of the most dangerous spots on the highway. "Around 40 road accidents have taken place on three identified spots on this highway after its construction. Most of these mishaps have occurred due to the lack of sign posts and other deficiencies on the road. We have constantly informed the relevant authorities of these shortcomings, but nothing has been done yet," OIC Pushpakumara claimed. The latest incident brings to 18 the number of road deaths within a span of three days. On Friday, 13 people were killed in two separate road mishaps in Gokarella and Peliyagoda. The dead included two schoolchildren. |
