Kahawa special correspondent The Australian government lifting their ban imposed on the import of Sri Lanka pineapples to Australia after three years, is a boon to pineapple cultivators and exporters here, said Dr. Mrs. Rohinie Ekanayake, the directress of the National Plant Quarantine Unit of the Agriculture Department in Katunayake, to the "Daily News". She was responding to a question by the "Daily News", as to why such a ban was imposed by Australia. "They had the fear on pest impacts to their cultivations through import of Sri Lanka pineapples to Australia, and they conducted research on the matter for three years, through their unit of National Plant Quarantine Service, and finally they came to a conclusion favourable for Sri Lanka", she said. "Their decision has been formally informed to SPC Unit of Plant Quarantine in Katunayake", she said. "Australia is a big foreign market for us to earn more and more foreign currency and I hope that, our pineapple cultivators and exporters would take fullest use of the opportunity", she said. Exports of pineapples to Australia has to be done under certain conditions laid down by them, and to register pineapple cultivators under our Agriculture Ministry, and to smoke the stuff before export are the two main conditions", she said. We must be thankful to Australia for opening themselves a strong market for our pineapples in order to earn foreign currency", she asserted. |
