Lanka will be a global free trade regime by 2005 - Abeysekera

by Murali Jayadeva

Nihal Abeysekera, President Federation of Chambers of commerce said that Sri Lanka being at the most vantage point in South Asian Region, home to one third of the world population would become the gateway to this region by 2005 and the country is working towards this goal with firm commitment.

Speaking at an event hosted by the chamber in honour of the visit of US congressmen he said that the relationship between US and Sri Lanka is at its peak. Abeysekera told the visiting congressmen that their visit would certainly provide an opportunity to study the ground situation and know the real needs of the country in today's context.

He also said it would give them the background knowledge to advise Sri Lanka on how to bring better value to Lankan customers in the US.

Commenting on the role played by chamber (FCCISL) on macro economic policies needed for overall socio economic development of the country, he said FCCISL serves as a link between Sri Lankan Business community and the affiliated bodies of SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
