SLMM stops its Thabrew inquiry by Ranga Jayasuriya The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, yesterday on a request made by the Peace Secretariat abandoned its inquiry into the murder of Dehiwala Intelligence Unit OIC Sunil Thabrew by an alleged LTTE pistol gang member, SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News. "The Peace Secretariat requested the SLMM to stop investigations saying this (the murder) is a criminal case and it is under the purview of the police," Haukland said. The SLMM commenced an inquiry into the murder of OIC Thabrew on a request by the Peace Secretariat and was expected to query the suspect Madan Kumar on his LTTE connections. Madan Kumar when interrogated by the police, confessed that he was an LTTE pistol gang member assigned to kill EPDP leader Douglas Devananda and OIC Thabrew. Haukland earlier said the SLMM would not rush to rule on the LTTE involvement in the assassination based on the suspect's confession and will launch its own investigation on which findings the SLMM will make its judgement. Scandinavian monitors requested access to the suspect to query from him on his LTTE connections but the request was not granted by the police. While declining to hold the Tigers responsible till the conclusion of the SLMM inquiry, Haukland last week told the Daily News, "if the suspect turns out to be an LTTE member and he has killed a police officer it is a grave violation of the ceasefire by the LTTE". |
