SLMM presses for Kinniya LTTE camp removal by Ranil Wijayapala The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) was pressing the LTTE to remove the camp in Tharanikulam in Kinniya in accordance with their ruling as the LTTE have not evacuated the camp from the location, SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday. The LTTE reportedly has demanded that the SLMM should first take action to remove the camp constructed by the Navy in Gopalapuram area in Nilaweli if they are to evacuate their camp in Kinniya. However, SLMM Deputy Chief said the incident in Nilaweli is in no way connected to this incident. "They are totally different incidents and the Navy has constructed the camp to relocate one of their camps and the SLMM had not given any ruling that the Navy has violated the ceasefire agreement." "The LTTE should comply with the SLMM ruling as the SLMM clearly stated that they have violated the ceasefire agreement by constructing a new camp in government controlled areas following the signing of the ceasefire agreement," Haukland added. The pro-LTTE Tamilnet website quoting Trincomalee LTTE political wing leader Thilak has reported that they had not received the SLMM ruling by Tuesday evening. However, the SLMM Deputy Chief refuted this allegation that it was impossible since the ruling was decided on Monday evening. Asked whether any time frame has been given to the LTTE to evacuate the camp the Deputy Chief said the SLMM has said the evacuation should be done immediately. "The Government and the Security Forces in the area are keen on the removal of camp. We are continuously pressing the LTTE regarding this since execution powers are not vested with the SLMM," Haukland added. |
