Galamuna irrigation project to be completed in August

by Rashomi Silva

The Galamuna irrigation Project in the Yala National park in the Kataragama area will be completed in August this year, the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management announced yesterday.

The project which started in September last year had to be halted mid way temporally due to an environmental issue raised by an environmental NGO. However, the project was given the green light to proceed further, with instructions to minimising adverse impact on the environment and on the Yala Park.

The Menik ganga will be diverted from the place known as Duwa in the Yala National Park and a dam will be built across the river to provide water to six rivulets in Kataragama.

The estimated project will cost over Rs 70 million. The foreign component of the project is provided by the Japanese government while the local component will be provided by the Irrigation and Water Management Ministry.

It is anticipated that the irrigation scheme will provide water for over 500 acres of paddy and alternate crop cultivation for the Yala and Maha seasons, and over 500 families are expected to be benefitted.
