National Diaster Management Council headed by the President met for the first time on Monday at the President's House and decided to introduce new legislation to set up a high powered institute capable of handling any type of natural disaster. It was also decided that the President and the Prime Minister should respectively be the Chairperson and the Vice Chairman of the proposed institute which would be officiated to the National Disaster Management Council, Cabinet Sub Committee on Distress Management and the Human Disaster Management Council. Responding to a query raised by the President on relief activities launch by the government, Minister Karu Jayasooriya Chairman of the National Disaster Management Council explained that arrangements are under way to utilise all aid loans and donations both foreign and local for the relief of the needy'. The President emphasised the importance of gaining in advance knowledge of such disastrous situations through scientific and hitech research. She also pointed out the importance of combined efforts of the Central Environment Authority and the Ministry of Environment in association with foreign expertise in combating such natural disasters in future. Ministers Karu Jayasooriya, Thilk Marapana, John Amaratunga, and Ravindra Samaraweera also participated at the meeting. |
