Wattala special correspondent The need of the hour is to improve education through morality based on religion. To achieve this objective, religious organisations should promote the religious environment within the schools as well as all institutes of higher education in the country, said His Lordship Most Rev. Oswald Gomis, Archbishop of Colombo at the ceremony held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Good Shepherd Balika Vidyalaya, Hendala, Wattala recently. The archbishop said, the progress of society largely depends on the ideas and attitudes of its people. In relation to the power of the mind, material wealth or the attendant authority plays only second fiddle. Therefore, the moulding of character is indispensable for social progress. Knowledge without moral rectitude as its aim is self-destructive. If we are ever to succeed having understood the present realities, we should contribute our mite to instal a system of education enriched with religious values, the archbishop concluded. Minister of Interior & Christian Affairs, John Amaratunga, Western Provincial Councillor, Lawrence Madiwela, General Manager of Catholic Schools, Rev. Ivan Perere and Nayakakanda Parish Priest, Rev. Gregory Jayamanne participated at the occasion. A tailor training shop with four sewing machines donated by Mrs. Majorie Jayasinghe, wife of late Wattala MP and Minister, for the benefit of the students was also opened. |
