UC member responds to Daily News

Reference to our Page one story headlined "Politico in hospital rumpus" of June 23, Ja-ela Urban Council member Christie Caldera states that Ragama Hospital authorities refused to treat the cut wounds on his fingers which were continuously bleeding.

He states that the Ragama Police arrested him on a false compliant made by the doctor of the Ragama Hospital who refused to treat him." I tried to settle a dispute at a funeral between two of my friends at Kala-eliya resulting in two fingers on my left hand being severely cut. He said, "I came to the Ragama Hospital for immediate treatment as the bleeding continued to rise".

Recounting the incident the UC member said that when he went to the OPD to register himself no one was at the counter. Hence he directly proceeded to the Doctor in Ward 5 and requested that he be treated. But the doctor refused to do so and he was asked to bring an OPD ticket.

He told him that no one was present at the OPD. Then the Doctor made a call to the OPD but no one answered the phone.

Thereafter, a doctor in charge told him if the OPD is closed, wait until it opens to get the ticket.

"The doctor refused to treat me until the OPD opened". Since he was not aware what time this would be and since his hand was bleeding profusely he pleaded for his hand to be treated .

But he (the doctor) refused to do so and scolding him left the ward. Thereafter, I banged the table and tried to leave the ward." At that time, five labourers of the hospital came on the scene and attacked me. However, I escaped and ran towards the Ragama town. But they chased and caught me and took me back to the Hospital. On the way they were also discussing a plan to take him to a ward and attack him.

"Thereafter, I saw a Police constable and begged him to rescue me. The PC came to his assistance and took him to the Hospital Police Post. "However, I did not reveal that I am an Urban Council member. At that time a nurse came and bandaged my hand without applying any medicine. Thereafter, I was taken to the Ragama Police Station on the pretext of obtaining a statement and put me in a cell."

He then told the Police officers that he was an Urban Council member and if anything happened to him as a result of the continuous bleeding in his hand, the Police officers and the doctor would be held responsible." "But they ignored what I said.

However, I did not receive treatment for my wound from 1 am on June 21 to 12 noon the next day . "When I was in the Police station the doctor threatened to call a strike if the Police bailed me out. However, after I was released I came to the National Hospital in Colombo and obtained treatment."
