SLMM laments absence of demarcation lines in Kinniya

by Ranil Wijayapala

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) yesterday said the absence of demarcation lines between the Government and LTTE controlled areas hamper their attempts to resolve the dispute between the Army and the LTTE in Kinniya.

SLMM Spokesperson Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily News yesterday that the two parties should solve the matter themselves since it was difficult for the SLMM to decide whether the area comes under the government or the LTTE.

The SLMM teams from Trincomalee have visited the area where the alleged dispute has taken place on Thursday evening, Bragadottir added.

The Sri Lanka Army alleged on Thursday that the LTTE cadres were engaged in constructing a camp in the government controlled area in Manirasakulam.

The LTTE had defied the Army request to stop their construction work and had fired a 40 mm hand grenade in a provocative move some 300 meters away from the Army officials. Meanwhile, there had been lengthy dicussions between the SLMM Chief Tryggve Telefssen and Defence Secretary Austin Fernando yesterday at the Defence Ministry regarding the issue.

Defence Secretary Austin Fernando said that he was awaiting the recommendations by the SLMM in Trincomalee to take action on the issue.

However, he said he has explained to the SLMM Chief that incidents of this nature could hamper the peace process and what may happen consequent to such incidents during his lengthy discussion with the SLMM Chief.

LTTE Trincomalee leader Thilak has also complained to the SLMM that the Army has violated the ceasefire agreement as armed soldiers tried to enter LTTE controlled areas in Kurankupachchan, Kinniya. Defence sources said that the LTTE still continues with their construction work at the disputed site despite the case still pending with the SLMM.
