Two passengers killed in bus mishap

Two passengers were killed on the spot when a peoplised bus travelling from Kandaketiya to Mahiyanganaya ran off the road and overturned near the Loggaloya Mahaweli Reservoir at around 7.20 am yesterday. Another 47 passengers sustained injuries in the mishap. The bus belongs to the Mahiyangana depot of the Uva bus company. The injured were admitted to Mahiyangana, Kandeketiya, Uraniya and Badulla hospitals.

221 computer centres in schools countrywide - Minister

Mass Communication Minister Imithiaz Bakeer Markar said the Asian Development Bank granted Rs. 800 million to train students in computer education and Information Technology. The Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku had made arrangements to open computer training centers in 221 schools in the country.

He was addressing a Janahamuwa in Henamulla area in Panadura Electorate. The Minister said Computer Education and Information Technology is a vital need of eduction at schools in our country today.

Clarification

With reference to our news item headlined Fraud Case: Two Foreigners Granted Bail: which appeared on page 3 of the Daily News of 3rd June 2003, Messrs David Rose and Mark Gabby state that at no time were they produced before Court but only appeared before the Fort Magistrate Court on notice.

They also claim that part of the story which stated that they were required to furnish surety bail is false.

They were only required to enter into a personal bond in a sum of Rs. 500,000.

Waves flow on to Galle Road

Tidal waves have started to flow on to the Galle Road through the gigantic boulder reef placed in Seenigama, Hikkaduwa by the Coast Conservation Department in 1998-99. In the rough season both sides of the Galle Road behind this reef is turning like a pond with sea sand.

According to the people of these areas the reef placed in 1998-99 is not intact. The body of this reef has a lack of boulders. Owing to these differences the sea water has started to flow through the reef to the Galle Road along with sand.

Expatriate Lankans in Maldives donate to Flood Relief Fund

Expatriate Sri Lankans in the Maldives with the assistance of the Sri Lankan High Commission have donated Rs. 235,000 for the Sri Lankan Government's relief efforts towards the recent flood victims in the South.

So far the Sri Lankans who are in business in the Maldives, the Staff of the High Commission and the expatriates' Sports Clubs have responded positively to the appeals of the Government.The Sri Lankan staff attached to the Fihalhohi Resort has contributed the highest amount of five hundred dollars to this fund.The High Commissioner for the Maldives T.Z.A. Samsudeen told that High Commission is continuing to receive contributions from the expatriate Sri Lankans who work in Male and at resorts around Male.

Three interdicted

A nursing officer, an attendant and a labourer attached to the General Hospital, Trincomalee have been interdicted on the direction of the Secretary, Provincial Ministry of Health over the incident of removing a baby from the ward a few hours after the birth. A woman posing as a hospital employee is alleged to have taken away the baby under the pretext of taking him to the doctor.
