by Asanga Warnakulasuriya A four member gang escaped with Rs. 1.7 million from the possession of a Tamil couple whom they had followed all the way from Kotahena to Dehiwela. Cautioned by the alarming increase of robberies, they had also taken their savings of Rs.1.7 million in cash in two polythene bags. The couple unaware of the gangsters on their trail had stopped near the entrance of the relative's home. According to Dehiwela OIC IP P. R. P. Senanayeka, the husband had handed over the Rs. 1.7 million to his wife who remained outside while he went in to the relative's house to hand over Rs. 450,000. Seizing the opportunity, the three loitering gangsters in the three-wheeler had snatched the bag containing Rs. 1.7 million cash, from the wife and fled. The three suspects who had come upto Galle Road had thereafter taken a bus, while the three-wheeler was headed to Mt. Lavinia. With the help of Mt. Lavinia Police, Dehiwela Police had taken the threewheeler and driver into custody. They are on trail of the other three suspects. |
