Pongu Thamil celebrations urge resumption of peace talks

by T. Senthivelarar and R. Thurairatnam

Pongu Thamil celebrations held in the Jaffna University medical faculty grounds yesterday stressed the demand to recognise the political aspirations of Tamil people and the urgent need for peace with normalcy. It also emphasised on the necessity to resume the stalled peace talks and establish a sustainable solution for the Tamil people to live in freedom and dignity.Shops, schools, government offices and other institutions were closed yesterday enabling the students, government servants and others to participate in the event. All roads led to the Jaffna university medical faculty grounds. People from all parts of the peninsula actively participated at the event.

Police and army were on patrol at the main roads leading to the site. But there was no sign of them inside the grounds.

Many local and foreign journalists and photographers were at the site to cover the event. They seem to show more interest in obtaining views of the general public. Jaffna and Wanni based papers and the LTTE radio 'the Voice of the Tigers' (VoT) operating from Wanni gave wide coverage for the event.
