Panadura Girls' school hit by graft by Nadira Gunatilleke Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku has ordered an immediate inquiry into complaints from parents of a leading girls' school in Panadura against certain authorities of the school who it is claimed are demanding bribes to accommodate its own students who have passed their GCE O/L to the A/L classes of the same school. "It is being revealed that school authorities including the Principal has been demanding large sums of cash from the helpless parents of O/L students who had in any case qualified to enter the A/L of the same school", an official of the Education Ministry said. According to this official the principal and some of the school teachers had demanded money from the students who sat for their O/L's in December last year. "The principal and the teachers have told them that either they have to pay varying sums of money - running into thousands - or forgo the chance of gaining admission to the Advanced Level classes," the official said. Minister Kodithuwakku has ordered relevant officials to conduct a full investigation about the accusation and submit a report within one week. According to the Ministry Official the school authorities are allowed to charge school fees and a fee for the school development fund. Receipts should be issued for those charges. However this is the time they had come across a case where money is being solicited for school promotions. |
