"If thugs can take law into their own hands when something is printed which is inconvenient for them, it is a dark day for democracy in this country," PA Media Spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunugama told a media briefing yesterday. He said attacks on the media had been taking place during the last few days. An extremely dangerous attack was launched on "Lakmina" newspaper a few days ago. The most significant aspect of this attack is that upto now the Police have failed to identify the assailants. "When it comes to Police matters and enforcing the law, the Government is totally silent. The people had come with automatic weapons and bombs and burnt the printed newspapers simply because obviously they do not agree to what was printed there. But on this day, the Police and the security services had not been able even to find out who the culprits are. This follows the attack on the Government Press which was totally motivated by the UNP attempt to prevent the publication of a Government gazette. Today newspapers are full of reports that the UNP MPs, Provincial Councillors and Pradeshiya Sabha members and even their secretaries are taking the law into their own hands assaulting Police officers and public officials. However, the Government is carrying on as though nothing has happened, he said. |
