SLMM Head to meet LTTE

by Ranil Wijayapala

The Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Tryggve Telefssen is due to meet the LTTE hierarchy this week to sort out matters relating to the release of a sailor and the assassinations continuing in the East, SLMM spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily News yesterday.

She said the SLMM head is of the opinion that he should have a direct discussion with the LTTE hierarchy as they have defied the SLMM ruling that they should release the sailor under their custody.

"The SLMM is urging the LTTE to abide by the rulings of the SLMM as they agreed", she added.

The SLMM head last week had also written a letter to LTTE political chief S.P. Thamil Selvan expressing his concerns over the series of systematic killings of political activists continue in the East allegedly by the LTTE.

Telefssen in his letter to Thamil Selvan mentioned that the systematic killing continuing in the East is a threat to the ceasefire agreement and also to the ongoing peace process.

"The meeting between the SLMM head will take place within this week in Kilinochchi though the date and the agenda for the meeting has not yet been fixed", she said.

She said the SLMM is highly concerned about the killing of political activists and intelligent operatives of the Army and had a series of discussions with Government officials and the LTTE over the phone during the weekend.

The SLMM also expressed concerns about the way the LTTE acted in Puttur when the Police arrested, one of the suspects in the Thevasooriyan killing in Puttur last Friday.

The suspected LTTE cadres threatened suicide to evade arrest by the Police. However, Police after convincing the SLMM and the LTTE that it was purely a civil matter, arrested the LTTE cadres and remanded them till June 19.
