Economic chaos if PA comes to power - Azwer

by our Puttalam corr.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister and Chairman Puttalam District Development Committee A.H.M. Azwer addressing a meeting of UNP 'Balamandalaya' members during an orientation programme , warned that in the unlikely event of the PA coming to power again the people would have to relive the economic chaos brought upon this country during the periods of cohabitation in 1970-1977 and the" pariwasa" period it had with the JVP.

Addressing party activists at the meeting in Puttalam Minister Azwer also said; that, "one PA Member of Parliament has recently told that the UNPers without being even known to their 'Nidi Pedura' (sleeping mat), the PA will take-over power from the UNF. One has to be sympathetic with this MP because if the PA-JVP 'Sandanaya' were to take place, he and 19 other MPs of the SLFP in Parliament would have lost their seats since the JVP has vowed to increase their present strength of Members from 16 to 30 and more. It is stunning to note that the original SLFPers in Parliament and offered as sacrificial lambs in the political altar of this country, by their power-hungry leadership," he contended.

He made an appeal to all original SLFPers to be alert of the manoeuvres of 'three men' who have surrounded around the President and who conspired to oust the Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse, and the senior strong man of the Party, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle. This power hungry trio also want to send the former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake and other SLFP stalwarts such as Richard Pathirana and D. M. Jayaratne in to political wilderness, purely for the sake of grabbing political power.

The minister said that Anura Bandaranaike who has well developed a habit of doing the wrong thing at the right time, has swallowed the dead rope of the JVP which had shown him a dangling carrot for him to chase and go around the country proclaiming that he will be the Prime Minister soon. But the thinking of his sister is well known to the political analysts of this country, who has expressed views that she has no intention of making her brother the Prime Minister."

"It is a position of political hotchpotch in the SLFP and the PA rank. They have no political will or vision for future. It is merely a cart in which they are pulled hither and thither in chasing a mirage, thinking that the golden pot of political power could be reached", Azwer said.
