Presentation of Asian Heroes Award to PM today

The presentation of Asian Heroes Award to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will take place this evening (11) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Tokyo.

The award is presented by Time.

Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris is expected to receive the award on behalf of the Sri Lankan Premier who is scheduled to leave for Sri Lanka after participating at the Tokyo Conference.

New Basnayake Nilame

Former Southern Provincial Councillor, Ranjith Wijesekera has been elected new Basnayake Nilame of the Devinuwara Siri Vishnu Maha Devalaya.

At the election held on June 10 at the Ruhunu Cultural Centre, Nupe, Matara, Ranjith Wijesekera polled 328 votes while the other contestant former Basnayake Nilame, Attorney-at-Law, Lalith Kantha Jayasekera polled only 158 votes. Accordingly Wijesekera was elected with a majority of 170 votes.

Divisional Secretaries and Grama Niladaris (only Buddhist) of the entire district of Matara are eligible to vote at this election. Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs, W. D. Sunil conducted the election.

Dawn of Hope in Tokyo

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited has been invited by the Chuo University in Tokyo to conduct the Dawn of Hope photographic exhibition, which depicts the horrors of the ethnic conflict, the value of peace and the country's transformation from violence to a peaceful situation.

The exhibition will coincide with the anniversary of the Faculty of Policy Studies of the Chuo university. It will be held from June 10 to 12 at the Chuo Univ Korakuen Campus, and from 16 to 20 at the Chuo Univ Tama Campus, Tokyo, Japan. Dawn of Hope is hosted by the Faculty of Policy Studies, Chuo University and co-sponsored by Lake House. The exhibition is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Japan Bank for International Co-operation, Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan and the Mainichi Newspapers.
