Main aim of Gem and Jewellery Authority to support 'Regaining Sri Lanka' initiative

by Kushani Ratnayake

The newly appointed Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Authority, Tennakoon Rusiripala said that the main concentration of the Authority is to take part and support "Regaining Sri Lanka" by providing opportunities for employment in the Gem and Jewellery sector.

"We can provide jobs in these fields but we need to reconstruct the system. We would like to give our support in every way. We are also planing to reconstruct factories for gem cutting and to provide other necessary requirements, such as introducing new technological machines which will help the industry to move forward" he said.

He also said that the Authority is planning to open a new counter at the airport to boost the gem and jewellery industry. A special brochure will be given to tourists and during the flight, passengers will be shown a documentary on the Gem Industry in Sri Lanka.

The Authority also plans to construct a special centre to train Gem cutters and to provide facilities for the gem industry. Five Pradeshiya sabhas have been entrusted to stop illicit gemming and to strengthen the gem industry.
