by Jayantha Sri Nissanka An inmate was killed during a jail break by four prisoners of the Negombo prison in the wee hours of yesterday. All four inmates were serving long sentences for murder and robbery. They were fired upon by prison guards on the parapet while fleeing resulting in the death of one prisoner and the capture of another while the other two made good their escape. Commissioner of Prisons Upali Dharmabandu told the Daily News that the dead prisoner was involved in a murder and the other three have been convicted for robberies. When queried as to how a prisoner was killed, Dharmabandu said that an officer who warned the prisoners to stop had not done so which forced the officer who was in the turret to shoot at them. "As a result a prisoner was killed", he added. Commissioner Dharmabandu said that an inquiry is being conducted as to how prisoners have escaped. He said it was mandatory for a prison officer on duty to make his rounds every hour. "The officer might have been asleep instead . We have appointed a senior officer to inquire into the incident", he added. |
