Following Tokyo: Akashi to fly to London for talks with Balasingham

by Bharatha Malawararachchi reporting from Tokyo

Japan's Special peace envoy to Sri Lanka Yasushi Akashi will fly to London to convey the outcome of the Tokyo Conference to the Chief Negotiator of the LTTE Anton Balasingham.

The Japanese ambassador in Sri Lanka is due to visit Kilinochchi to inform the LTTE about the outcome within the next 48 hours. Responding to a question raised by media at a press conference held after the successful conclusion of the Tokyo Conference Akashi said there is an unanimous message from the conference to the LTTE to return to the peace process. " We will be explaining to them the outcome of the conference on the basis of the Tokyo declaration which is very comprehensive and very clear."

" There is a strong message to the LTTE that they themselves and their people are only to benefit from this overwhelming support from the international community." Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris also said it was evident in all the presentations that were made that the donors were conscious of what Sri Lanka had to offer the world.

" Our legacy, our history and the society we had in our country is unique. The calibre of the human resources of Sri Lanka and way of life, economy, its respect for human life, its richness and diversity.

The ethnic diversity of our country was seen as a source of strength rather than as a source of weakness or embarrassment." He added.

Prof. Peiris also said the international community expressed its strong resolve, to do all of its part to ensure the restoration of Sri Lanka to its earlier esteem. " There is a close nexus between the economic development of our country and the pursuit of the political objectives underpinning the peace process.

Sri Lanka will make the best use of the resources which have been put at our disposal. Peace dividends must touch the lives of the people and parallel with that we must address the underpinning political objectives", he stressed.
