Lanka prisoners to compete in international art competition

Prisoner and ex-prisoner artists will have an opportunity to showcase their creative talents in an art competition sponsored by Prison Fellowship Sri Lanka. Seeking the best painting, drawing and sculpture, PF Sri Lanka is encouraging prisoners and ex-prisoners to illustrate the theme of this year's competition, "Mercy".

From 1990 onwards this art competition has been held once every 4 years, with Lanka Prison Fellowship sponsoring it on a low key. This year's competition will be held at John de Silva Memorial Hall on 7th and 8th June 2003.

The chief guest of the event is Hon. Minister John Amaratunga, the Minister of Interior and Christian Affairs.

The judges for the final round of the local competition are Mr. Reggy Kandappa, Mr. David Beiling, Mrs. Nadin David, Mrs. Lathifa Ismail and Ms. Rhuvani Rambukwella. The judging criteria includes the way the competitors bring out the theme, creative ability portrayed, use of colour, skill in sketching, drawing, etc. Participation for the competition has increased substantially over the years, and this years some of the inmates will actually be present at the venue of the exhibition.

"Prison is often a place of desolation, where beauty is a stranger. Yet prison does not often stifle the creative spirit of men and women. In recognition of the curative and artistic talents of prisoners and ex-prisoners Prison Fellowship Sri Lanka is sponsoring a national prisoners art competition. The competition is designed to provide men and women behind bars an opportunity for artistic expressions as well as to celebrate their creativity.

In many cases, prisoners who have developed artistic skills while serving their time will continue this hobby upon release," said Rhuvani Rambukwelle one of the coordinators of the competition from Lanka Prison Fellowship.

At the exhibition, the paintings will be sold and part of the proceeds will go to the prison welfare fund and the rest will be deposited in the pass books of the respective prisoners.

The top entries from Sri Lanka will compete internationally in August 2003 during the Prison Fellowship International Convocation in Toronto, Canada.

In addition to the international recognition, more than US $ 1000 to US $ 5,000 in prize money will be awarded.

Prison Fellowship Sri Lanka is a chartered ministry of Prison Fellowship International, a network of 98 affiliated national ministries committed to serving prisoners, ex-prisoners, crime victims and families.
