DHL adds Shanghai to Asian Air network

DHL Express today said the launch of an overnight express service between Hong Kong and Shanghai, bringing the total number of destinations serviced by DHL's Asian Air Network to 13. The new service commenced on June 2.

The new service will be operated Mondays through Thursdays by Dagonair using an A330-300 passenger aircraft as a freighter service with a payload capacity of 22 tonnes.

This new expansion initiative will make Shanghai, the third city in China served by DHL's Asian Air Network, a company press release stated.

DHL's Asian Air Network connects the capital cities and other major business centres in the region via the Company's Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong. The connections are made by dedicated air services that operate specifically for DHL, and provide DHL's customers with an overnight service of afternoon pick-ups with morning deliveries the next day across the whole region.

The partnership with Dragonair represents a major step towards expanding the coverage of DHL's Asian Air Network in China. Currently, the Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen are served by road from the Hong Kong Hub. In addition, DHL Express moves customer shipments on more than 400 commercial air services in Asia Pacific each day.

John Mullen, Chief Operating Officer, DHL - Asia Pacific, said: "This new development will enable DHL to capture the increasing demand for express delivery service in China and leverage the opportunities arising from growing intra-Asia traffic. It forms part of DHL's ongoing investment in our network." Jerry Hsu, DHL Express' Regional Director, Greater China and Korea, said: "With the new service, customers will be offered greater flexibility - the latest possible collection times and early next day deliveries - as well as better onward connection to other major cities in Asia Pacific through our hub in Hong Kong. The partnership with Dragonair will further cement our leading position in China."

DHL's successful operation in China, which dates back to 1986, was recently boosted by the worldwide integration of DHL and DHL Danzas Air & Ocean (formerly Danzas) under the umbrella of DHL. Together, DHL and DHL Danzas Air & Ocean are able to increase the syneriges of their operations by combining DHL's transport capabilities and DHL Danzas' expertise in warehousing and warehousing management.
