Sugath, Dharsha win 400m Susanthika placed behind Guzel Ranjeeva Seneviratne reporting from Thailand BANGKOK, Thursday - Uzbekistan's Khubbieva Guzel came up with a stupendous performance to win the gold medal in the women's 100 metres final by beating Sri Lanka's Sprint Queen, Susanthika Jayasinghe in a photo finish in the third leg of the Asian Athletic Grand Prix worked off at the Thammasat Sports Complex here today. Guzel with a determined run edged out Jayasinghe by one hundredth of a second by clocking 11.30 seconds. Susanthika with a timing of 11.31 seconds had to be satisfied with the Silver medal. Thailand's Orranut Klomdee won the Bronze by clocking 11.52 seconds. Susanthika said that her defeat was a blessing in disguise as it would enable her to concentrate on more important events like the World Championships in August. Sugath Tillekeratne came up with a marvellous performance in the men's 400 metres event to win the Gold medal with a timing of 46.66 seconds. Compatriot Rohan Pradeep Kumara who won the Gold in Hyderabad and Colombo won the Silver by clocking 46.77 seconds while Prasanna Amarasekera clinched the Bronze with a time of 46.92 seconds in the event which was dominated by the Sri Lankans. K. V. Damayanthi Darsha continued her supremacy in the women's 400 metres event by bagging the Gold medal clocking 52.20 seconds while Svetlana Bodritskaya of Kazakhstan won the Silver with a timing of 52.86 seconds. Thailand's Saowalee Keawchuay finished third by timing 54.80 seconds. Hurdler Sriyani Kulawansa was disappointed once again by losing to Thailand's Trecia Roberts for the third successive time in the women's 100 metres hurdles. Trecia won the Gold medal with a timing of 13.22 seconds while Kulawansa had to be satisfied with the Silver by clocking 13.51 seconds. |
