Gypsy child found dead A six year old Gypsy child was found strangled to death close to a rest house at Chilaw beach, Police said yesterday. "The Police suspect that the girl has been raped before the murder," Chilaw ASP Roshan Fernando told the Daily News. According to the ASP, the gypsy family had arrived in Chilaw from Katunayake overnight by train where they had met another gypsy family. The two families, including the gypsy women had then consumed alcohol and spent the night at the beach. At around 3.30 a.m. yesterday, the mother of the gypsy girl had noticed that her daughter was missing. After a search made by police, the body was found in a nearby thicket, the ASP said. Police believe that a suspect at the rest house had forcibly taken the gypsy girl to a thicket and raped her while the gypsies were sleeping after consuming liquor. Chilaw Police investigating under the direction of Chilaw ASP are on the trail of the suspect. Apology to Ravi Karunanayake - Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited hereby tenders an unqualified apology to Minister Ravi Karunanayake for the pain of mind and loss of reputation caused to him consequent upon the publication of a news item titled "Bribery Complaint against Ravi Karunanayake" in the Daily News of September 23, 2000. The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited hereby states that the allegations attributed expressly or impliedly in the said news item to Minister Ravi Karunanayake are incorrect and without a basis and therefore The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited hereby unconditionally withdraws these allegations. Customs detect textiles haul The Customs Preventive Unit yesterday uncovered 40,000 yards of imported textile material belonging to a BOI company being unloaded at a private businessman's stores at Avissawella. The material had been transported to Avissawella in three lorries. The value of the material had not been estimated yet, the Customs authorities said. Investigations directed by the Director General of Customs Sarath Jayatilleke and conducted by Director Preventive H.M.R. Tissera assisted by Chief Preventive Officer Bennet Ratnayake yesterday took eight persons including the businessman into custody. The Customs authorities also recovered 80,000 yards of cloth from the same businessman's stores. The authorities are conducting investigations to ascertain whether these items had also been owned by the BOI company. Assistant Preventive officers Nihal Seneviratne, P.A.M.R. Sagara and Suresh Jayatilleke are assisting in the investigations. Top USAID official visits Jaffna Deputy Administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Frederick W. Schieck, visited Jaffna yesterday ahead of the crucial Tokyo donor conference, the US embassy said. The number two official at USAID arrived on Wednesday to launch a water project in Jaffna. Schieck was scheduled to visit an area in Jaffna being de-mined by the US state department's Quick Reaction De-mining Force (QRDF). The USAID deputy administrator will travel to Japan for the donor conference on reconstruction and development of Sri Lanka set for June 9-10. Japan is hosting the conference to boost international financial support to rebuild Sri Lanka. US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage will be one of the key figures at the conference, which will be addressed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. |
