FMM condemns Minister's action

The Free Media Movement condemns forthrightly the death threats that have been levelled by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Mahinda Wijesekera on the life of Lucien Rajakarunanayake, a distinguished journalist and a former Chairman of Lake House.

Mr. Rajakarunanayake has made a complaint to the police headquarters that Minister Wijesekera had threatened him regarding an article which he had written for a newspaper about 2 1/2 years ago.

The Free Media Movement considers this incident not only as a threat that is been aimed at the professional freedom enjoyed by the journalists of this country, but also to the security of the lives of journalists as well, a press release issued by Ariyananda Dombaghawatte convenor FMM and secretary victor Ivan stated.

It's a fact which cannot be taken too mildly as it is a threat that had been made by an influential minister of a government which had come to power promising to eradicate such happenings in a context of a background where there was no systematic action being taken to secure Journalists who were constantly subjected to threats, during the era of the previous rule. The Free Media Movement emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the government to hold a full inquiry into this incident and if the person responsible is found guilty lawful action be taken to prevent incidents of such a nature in the future and safeguard the journalists.
