The Government of the Republic of Korea yesterday granted a sum of US $ 50,000 for flood relief in response to an urgent international appeal made by the Sri Lankan Government, states a Korean Embassy press release. The Ambassador to Korea in Sri Lanka, Lee Nam-soo handed over the Korean Government's contribution to the Minister of Power and Energy and Chairman of the Cabinet Sub Committee on Disaster Management, Karu Jayasuriya at Srimathipaya last afternoon. Ambassador Lee Nam-soo on behalf of the Government of Korea and its people expressed his deep sympathies to the victims of the disaster and in view of the strong bilateral relations existing between Sri Lanka and Korea expressed Korea's need to support Sri Lanka in this hour of need. He also informed the Minister that the Korean community in Sri Lanka had also responded to the government's appeal. The Korean Resident's Associations made a donation to the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees while the Korean Businessmen's Association visited the disaster striken areas and donated tents and clothes to the flood victims. Wishing the Sri Lankan Government and its people a quick recovery from this calamity, the Government of Korea extends its heartfelt sympathies to the Government of Sri Lanka and the people of the flood affected regions. |
