Minister Mohamed tours flood affected areas in Matara district

A programme, to assist the people in the Matara district which has been affected by the recent floods and earthslips, were implemented under the guidance of Minister of Western Region Development M. H. Mohamed.

The Minister who visited a number of flood affected areas including Akuressa, Godapitiya, Bopagoda and Morawaka promised to assist the people in the re-construction of their houses damaged due to the floods. Minister Mohamed personally distributed rice, sugar, dry fish, milk foods, textiles and school books to a large number of people at the Godapitiya Jumma Majeed Mosque.

The Katheeb of the Jumma Majeed Mosque, Nasim Hadjiar, explaining the damage caused by the floods informed the minister that about 500 people in the area had lost their houses and the Godapitiya Muslim Maha Vidyalaya is completely destroyed. The Minister then visited the Bopagoda Sri Paramananda Pirivena and met the Chief Incumbent of the temple, Ven. Revatha Thera. After listening to Ven. Revatha Thera, the Minister promised to provide funding for the re-construction of the temple. He also informed the gathering that he will instruct the Urban Development Authority to prepare a programme to assist poor families construct their houses.

The Minister distributed dry rations and clothes to a number of displaced families in the Morawaka area. Goods worth about Rs. two million were distributed during this inspection tour by Minister Mohamed. H. G. Sirisena, Chief Minister, Southern Provincial Council, Shaul Hameed, Chief Opposition Whip, Western Provincial Council, Hussain Mohamed, former Mayor of Colombo, Bandula Parakkarama Gunawardena, Consultant, Ministry of Western Region Development and Mr. Passaperuma, Director General of the Ministry also joined the Minister on this tour.
