SriLankan Airlines joins relief effort in flood-ravaged areas

SriLankan Airlines' aircraft rushed over five tonnes of emergency supplies from other countries to Sri Lanka to support the disaster relief effort against the worst floods and landslides to strike Sri Lanka in more than half a century, while the national carrier itself collected and sent four truckloads of supplies for distribution in the flood-ravaged areas.

A special team comprising 30 members of the airlines' staff took the supplies collected by the company's staff to remote villages in the Ratnapura district that had been devastated.

Relief supplies, which had been collected throughout the country included food, bottled water, medicine, Ayurveda medicine, and clothing, a SriLankan news release said.

The relief effort was organised by the airline's Manager, Employee Relations L.D.V. Gunasekare and Manager, Airport Service Support Saliya Udugama, who consulted the Government Agent of Ratnapura Mrs. Malini Premaratne. The SriLankan Airlines' team received the fullest support of the GA and the Sri Lanka Army's Co-ordinating Office in Ratnapura in identifying families and individuals who were in most desperate need of assistance.

"We at SriLankan Airlines work in a culture of service and specialise in taking care of people everyday, so it was natural for us to do what we could to help the thousands of people whose lives have been so cruelly affected by this catastrophe. We are proud to say that we received the fullest support of SriLankan Airlines' employees", said Gunasekare.

SriLankan Airlines also airlifted over five tonnes of flood relief items free to Sri Lanka, which had been collected by Embassies and High Commissions abroad.

The bulk of this relief effort included medicines from Germany and supplies from Singapore.
