TISL congratulates Govt.

Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) has congratulated President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government for their commitment in rebuilding the areas affected by the recent floods in several districts. They also thanked those who actively contributed to save the lives and property of the people who needed such assistance at this moment of national crisis.

"We have noted that the Government has now sought foreign aid to rebuild these affected ares and we wish the government every success in this endeavour', its executive director J.C. Weliamuna states in a media release.

In this context TISL, as the leading organisation in anti-corruption activities, requests the government to ensure that all measures are in place to utilise the funds/aid for the intended purpose. The national and international experience in dealing with such prior situations has shown that there is a great likelihood of corruption at various levels.

The TISL thus requests the Lankan government, all donor governments and other donor agencies to make sure that steps are taken by all parties concerned to ensure that a corruption-free collection and disbursement of funds/aid takes place, in a transparent and accountable manner. We have no doubt that the government will consider this request seriously and without any delay", the release stated.
