Proposals for amending the Standing Orders of Parliament aimed at ending the current trend of confrontational politics will be presented to the House by the Government in July. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will hold a meeting attended by party leaders on June 22 to obtain their final concurrence on the issue, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Prof.G.L.Peiris said. The Amendments aimed at changing the present confrontational political culture in the country has been initiated on a suggestion by the Prime Minister. A meeting was also held in Parliament to discuss opinions of the private sector. Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle MP, Vijitha Herath MP and representatives of Chamber of Commerce and Organisation of Professional Associations were present at this meeting. Fifteen Oversight Committees on various subjects including Irrigation, National Integration and Justice will be appointed to give practical expression to this objective. Each committee will be chaired by an Opposition Member of Parliament and participated by civil society leaders as well. Prof. Peiris said the proposals could be implemented shortly since they did not require any particular majority in Parliament. |
