Finance Minister, K. N. Choksy, yesterday told the Daily News that the Flood Relief Fund launched by the Ministry of Finance had received financial contributions totalling Rs. 50 million up to date. In addition to the financial contributions, several private sector companies affiliated to the Trade Chambers had made direct contributions to persons in the affected areas. Large quantities of building materials, furniture, clothing, school books and dry rations had been distributed by them to affected families. The de-silting of wells affected by the floods had also been undertaken by commercial groups. The monies received by the Fund are being released through the Department of Social Services. Coordinating Officers to supervise the restoration work have been appointed. A Committee chaired by Minister Karu Jayasuriya is overseeing the distribution of the funds and the progress of relief work. All contributions received qualify for 100% tax relief. |
