Sri Lanka to compete for Asia-Pacific ICT Awards

Sri Lanka's Information Communications Technology (ICT) industry will collectively participate at country level at the Asia Pacific ICT Awards 2003. All stakeholder associations have formed a national committee to reap the ripple effects of the prestigious awards by highlighting the country as a "Centre for Excellence in the Asia Pacific Region".

This will be the first time that Sri Lanka will be participating at these awards to be held in Cairns, Australia in September 2003 after having obtained membership in the Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) Network. The APICTA Network is a 15 member country body representing the region with the objectives of synergizing regional activities, regional and global networking, and promoting trade within the region. The awards night will also be preceded by a three-day Trade, Investment and Partnering (TIP) Congress where the member countries will be allocated time to make a country presentation.

The newly formed National ICT Awards committee has aso decided to align the local National Best Quality Software Awards 2003 as the selection criteria for the APICTA awards. Accordingly the local awards organized by the British Computer Society - Sri Lanka section will restructure its award categories to suit the international event.

APICTA has 12 principle categories where each country is entitled to enter its first three national winners of the relevant category. The categories range from education and training, health, security, to industrial and business applications, ecommerce, tourism, research and development, and student projects.

The local award category areas will be split and shared by the British Computer Society, Sri Lanka Association of Software Industry, Software Exporters Association, Association of Computer Training organizations, University of Colombo and Moratuwa, Sri lanka Institute of Information Technology according to the areas under their purview.

Though the glamour is in the awards, the mere presence of the country has many benefits beyond the awards, said Bimal Yainne, Vice President of the Sri Lanka Association of Software Industries and local convenor of APICTA. The congress and the awards also involves an exhibition where the nominees and the countries are allowed to put up stalls, for over 1000 delegates from various countries and associations are expected to attend the event.

APICTA estimates that the event would generate over US$250 million worth of new trade. Further, Sri Lanka's entry is expected to be strengthened by the possibility of an invitation that may be extended for a key note address at the conference; due to Sri Lanka's initiative in establishing a national ICT roadmap.

The local industry will also form a country pavilion and make a country pitch through presentation opportunities provided for at the event.

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board is also planning to contribute towards the country's participation and in turn bring down the cost of participation for the entrants.

APICTA consists of 15 countries in the Asia Pacific region including Malayasia, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and China. The network was established to create regional and global networking, synergy within member countries and create trading.
