Colombo 'Reds' grab Austasia Trophy

The Inaugural Indoor Cricket Tournament between Indian States and Sri Lanka Districts which commenced on May 21, 2003 conducted at the Austasia Indoor Cricket Stadium, Thalawathugoda on May 27, 2003 with the Grand Final contested between the two strong Sri Lankan sides, Colombo 'Reds' and Colombo 'Blues' captained by Asela Pathriana and Lyndon Hannibal.

The two Sri Lankan teams qualified to the finals beating Tamil Nadu and Haryana teams respectively.

Colombo 'Blues' won the toss and elected to bat first and made a modest 47 run in their quota of 16 overs. Thushendra Zoysa made a valuable contribution of 14 runs whilst Tharindu Mendis and Graham Fernandez each made 11 runs. The wrecker for the Colombo 'Reds' was Sachindra Gonaduwa who ended up with sensational bowling figures of 5 wickets for minus 17 runs thus carrying away the best bowlers award at the final. He was supported by Manoj Fernando who had figures of 2 for 1 run.

Colombo 'Reds' in their effort surpassed the required target of 48 at the end of the 8th over and eventually finished on 81 runs at the end of their 16 overs thus winning the game by 34 runs to win carrying away the Austasia Trophy.

Useful contributions by Dilshan Witharana (20) who took the award for the best batsman at the final, Sachindra Gonaduwa (14), Bumika Rasanjana (14) and Asela Pathirana (12) helped swell the Colombo 'Reds' total.

Thushendra Zoysa (2 for 0) and Graham Fenandesz (2 for 1) bowled best for the Colombo 'Blues'.

For his sterling all round a performance of 14 runs and 5 for minus 17, Sachindra Gonaduwa was adjudged the Man-of-the-Final.

The Grand Final was followed by awards presentation where Sri Lanka's ace spinner Muthiah Murlaidaran graced the occasion as the chief guest accompanied by Romesh Kaluwitharana, Director Sports, Austasia.
