Black band protest in Western Provincial Council

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The members of the ruling People's Alliance of the Western Provincial Council (WPC) together with MEP members and the NLF member yesterday participated in the WPC meeting wearing black wrist bands to protest the killing of Southern Provincial Minister M.K.Ranjith which occurred close to the High Security Zone recently.

However, the JVP members and the two members from the SLMC and the DWC attended the meeting as usual.

When the council members entered in the chamber wearing black bands, various interruptions were made by the opposition members of the UNP.

UNP Council member Lawrence Madiwela who raised a point of order asked the ruling PA whether they have worn these black bands to protest the legal situation that has arisen on the appointment of the Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray.

Replying to Madiwela, Western Province Co-operative, Trade and Food Minister Sunil Jayamini said that they have worn black bands to express their protest against the assassination of the Southern Provincial Minister.
