| Another political activist killed by Ranil Wijayapala and Trincomalee correspondent A second political activist killed by an unidentified armed gang, alleged to be members of the LTTE within 24 hours was reported in Trincomalee on Monday night, Defence sources said yesterday. Gnana Prakasan Nirupa Rasa, a member of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) was killed in the general area of Trincomalee town on Monday at 7.30 p.m. by an unidentified armed group, sources added. Thirty eight year old Rasa was a resident of No.32, Marathady, Trincomalee is a father of two. He earned his living as a mason. Trincomalee Police are investigating. The incident was reported just 24 hours following a similar type of incident which took place in Kattankudi in Batticaloa on Sunday night in which another political activist of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) was shot dead. Kalidasam Ramanan was killed by an unidentified armed group, suspected to be from the LTTE around 8 p.m. He was a former EPDP candidate for Navakkudah and reportedly arrived in the country from the Middle East for several years. He had also been a activist of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation, sources added. Kattankudi Police are investigating the incident. Meanwhile, Defence sources reported on Monday that EPDP organizer for Ampara District K.B.Gunaratne has been threatened on May 30 around 10 a.m. by two suspected LTTE cadres while he was in the general area of Panama, about 15 km south of Pottuvil. Gunaratne now residing in the Teachers' Quarters at the Ampara Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, in his complaint lodged at Ampara Police station has said. Four persons suspected to be from the LTTE who came on motorcycles to the Panama area have searched for him and later threatened his brother and brother's wife who are living close by. Two of those LTTE cadres were identified by civilians as Karathi and Yuwaraj, who threatened them. They had however gone away when villagers began to assemble at the location, defence reports added. Ampara Police are investigating into the incident. Meanwhile, Police and Army personnel in a combined search operation conducted following a number of complaints by villagers in Samudragama in Trincomalee arrested 134 suspected youth from the village. The villagers have made complaints to the Police that there had been a lot of suspicious people loitering in the area. Police has also seized some knives and other illegal equipment during the search operation. The search operation was conducted under supervision of Trincomalee HQI Nissanka Dassanayaka under the directive of Trincomalee SSP Upali Hewage. |
