Women's groups protest sexist AD The five organisations, namely NGO Women's Forum, Women and Media, Womens Education and Research Centre, Voice of Women, Mothers and Daughters of Sri Lanka have issued the following statement in relation to a recent advertisement. "We strongly protest against a recent newspaper advertisement in connection with an exhibition of paintings, photography, sculpture and performing art. "The visual in the ad depicts the nude back of a woman who holds her hair up high on her head. Her other hand is either placed on, or supports her breasts. We feel strongly that this advertisement with its titillating caption "wouldn't you like to see the other side" is insulting to women. "It sexually objectifies a woman's body through the caption and uses the image to draw attention to a product or sale exhibition which may have little connection to it. In the advertisement the woman is shown as a sexual object, and only that. The issue here is not about representing nudity or sexuality, but the tactic of using sexualized representations of women as a primary, even exclusive, way to sell a product. "We deplore such tactics and such a one-dimensional depiction of women. "We demand that advertising firms which market a significant percentage of products to women, stop this kind of cheap sexism and start treating their target group with the respect we deserve! |
