Record tea production in April Tea production in April has surpassed the highest ever posted previously for the same month, in 1999 and again in 2002. The total production this year has significantly increased to 29.3 million kg from 27.2 million kg, the highest ever recorded earlier. All three elevations have recorded increases for the month compared to last year - High Grown production has improved by 4%, Mid Grown by 22%; which is a significant contribution, and the Low Grown crop gained 4%, making the total national figure jump 7% to 29.3 million kg, which is an increase of 2 million kg over last year. Cumulatively from January however, only the High Grown production stays ahead of last year by 2% at 28.8 million kg whilst, the Mid Grown volume is 5% behind the previous year at 18.8 million kg and the Low Grown quantity is less by 1% with 53.2 million kg. The total national cumulative production up to end April this year is 100.9 million kg, which is 1.5% above the same period last year. Sri Lanka's tea production will inevitably dwindle to a much lower figure in May this year in view of the devastating effects the floods and landslides had in the main low country tea planting districts of Ratnapura, Matara, Galle and Kalutara where over 50% of 'Ceylon' tea is produced.
