Two soldiers attacked by Ranil Wijayapala and Trincomalee correspondent Two soldiers of the National Guard Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army were injured yesterday as an unidentified group shot at them and try to cut them with swords in Trincomalee around noon yesterday, Defence sources said. The two soldiers identified as J.L. Sisira Kumara and Yogarasa Mahendran were attacked by this unidentified group when they were walking with their two push bicycles near ICRC office, Centre road, Orr's Hill, in Trincomalee. Corporal J.L. Sisira Kumara attached to the 11th National Guard and private Yogarasa Mahendran attached to the 2nd Sri Lanka National Guard were in civilian clothes when they were attacked. They were admitted to Trincomalee base hospital and later brought to Colombo for further treatment, hospital sources said. The two victims had given a statement to the Police later in the afternoon that they were attacked by LTTE cadres who came in a van. The van had blocked their way and two persons came out of the vehicle shot at them and hacked them with swords. One of the victims had run towards nearby Trincomalee DIG's office to escape from the attackers while the other injured person had fallen in front of the ICRC office due to his injuries. The ICRC officials had taken the injured person to the hospital and the other injured person who ran towards the DIG office was admitted to hospital by Army personnel at the nearby Army camp. The Sri Lanka Army accuses the LTTE for a series of attacks on soldiers attached to the intelligence unit. The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Trincomalee said the LTTE has denied any involvement in the incident after the SLMM inquired about the incident from the LTTE office in Trincomalee. Trincomalee Police are investigating the incident.
