Dancing shows from Lanka in Nepal

Sri Lanka will send a dancing troupe to Nepal under Nepal - Sri Lanka Cultural Exchange Agreement to participate in the Mount Everest Golden Jubilee, Human resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry spokesman said.

He said that the Sri Lankan dancing troupe will present three International dancing shows during their stay in Nepal. Another few dancing shows will also present additional from the three International shows. The shows will be held in Nepal from May 29 to June 2.

Sri Lankan dancing troupe will present Giridevi dance, Ves dancing, Wadigapatuna, Gini Sisila, Pantheru dance, Lee Keli and several other traditional and creative dances. The ministry selected eleven dancers from students of cultural centres set up countrywide. Prominent writer Gunadasa Amarasekara and the Dean of the Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo, Dr. Ms. Rohini Paranavithana will represent Sri Lanka for the folk writers conference to be held at Nepal from May 31 and June 1.

Heatwave strikes Nuwara Eliya

The usual rains prior to the South West monsoon in the Nuwara Eliya District has completely disappeared and at the moment severe drought and heat wave is being experienced during the day and night for the past one month.

This is the first time the weather patterns have drastically changed and as predicted by eminent scientists that Nuwara Eliya may experience such weather changes. In the coming years Nuwara Eliya may be subjected to major landslides, earthslips and floods. At the moment all rains and strong gales have shifted to the down South of the Country.

In 1947, a major landslide occurred in the Kotmale electorate where an entire village got inundated and 90 families perished. At the time of late Dudley Senanayake as Minister of Agriculture got the services of an eminent geologist Professor G.M. Grimshaw from the Leeds University who did an in-depth survey and predicted such landslides and major earthslips could take place within another 50 years or so in places like Balangoda, Kotmale, Walapone, Nuwara Eliya and Hanguranketa.

Italy grants 100,000 Euro to flood victims

The Ambassador to Italy in Sri Lanka Salvatore Zotta in a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe states:

"In response to your appeal for international assistance to support the flood victims in Sri Lanka I have the honour to inform you that the Italian Government has decided to grant 100,000 Euro.

The money pledged will be channelled through OCHA (UN Office for Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs) and will be utilised for immediate flood relief measures for the population in the worst affected areas in Galle and Ratnapura.
