Jayasuriya to the rescue

Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya rendered yeoman services during the height of the floods in Matara when he made a surprise visit to the affected areas to grant relief to the unfortunate victims on Monday.

Jayasuriya distributed school uniforms, school books, rice packets and water to over 1,000 students in several areas of Matara. According to Matara businessman Najeeb Deen who co-ordinated the activities with Jayasuriya, the people forgot everything the moment they saw Jayasuriya and crowded around him like flies.

"Sanath coming to see them personally made them forget their plight. They were ever grateful to him," said Deen.

Jayasuriya visited at least six to seven affected areas in Matara, his hometown and saw for himself the devastation the floods had left. Several areas were impassable and the jeep that he was travelling in was half submerged in water.
