Cabinet Spokesman Minister Prof G.L Peiris told the weekly Cabinet briefing that it was the fervent desire of the government as well as the people to find a solution for the problem in a peaceful manner. Expressing the government's position on the recent crisis, the Minister said it was a mandatory requirement in the Constitution for the President to consult the Prime Minister on subjects like the allocation of portfolios to Ministers or effecting changes to such allocations. "Every citizen of this country should act within the framework of the Constitution. The Constitution will not be workable at all if the President does not consult the Prime Minister on taking important decisions especially when the Prime Minister is from another political party," he said. The Cabinet Spokesman further stated that the matter was referred to the Attorney General by Mass Communications Minister Imitiaz Bakeer Markar and the Government Printer. "The Attorney General has written to the President on her decision to take over the DLB and we think it appropriate for that response to be considered in the Cabinet as well since the AG is the principal law officer of the Government," he added. |
