The smallest ever automatic pistol to be found in Sri Lanka, a scaled down version of a 0.9mm pistol capable of firing 0.32mm bullets was taken into custody by the Crimes Division of Western North yesterday. The Belgian-made pistol was taken into custody while it was in possession of a wanted contract killer in Narahenpita. According to the OIC of Crimes Division WP North W.H.Wimalsdasa, the contract killer is said to have carried out the brutal murder in Ganemulla where a person was shot dead on Poson Day last year. "The contract has been given to the killer after the husband discovered that his wife was having a relationship with the deceased," he said. Police suspects that the same pistol had been used for the murder. Police also found three live 0.32mm bullets along with the pistol. Three persons, including the contract killer have been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the murder. Investigations were carried out by IP Jayantha Dharmakirthi, PS 22622 Harischandra, PS27561 Saman, and PS 27579 Ajith.
Cab kills two, eight injured Two persons were killed and eight injured when a speeding double-cab ran off the road into a group of people at a bus stop in Mundunkotuwa on the Chillaw-Colombo road on Monday. Sriyalatha (32) of Dunkannawa died on admission to the Marawila hospital and I.L. Wijayalatha Gunatilake (54) of Dunkannawa died at the Colombo National Hospital while the others are being treated at the Marawila Hospital and the Colombo National Hospital. The driver of the double-cab D. Nimal Bernard and the vehicle is in Police custody. P.D. Manjula (17) of Nattandiya testifying at the inquest held into the death of Wijayalatha said that they worked in a garment factory and there were nearly 50 persons at the bus halt around 6 a.m. after the night shift. A speeding double-cab came from the direction of Chillaw veered out of the road and knocked against a gate post. City Coroner Edward Ahangama postponed the inquest for June 14. AJMO

US$ 605,000 worth flood relief from China The Chinese Government has agreed to provide approximately US$ 605,000 worth of assistance to Sri Lanka for the ongoing efforts to provide flood relief to affected people. The agreement for provision of this assistance was concluded by way of an Exchange of letters between the Chinese government represented by Assistant Minister, Ministry of Commerce and the Charge d' Affairs a.i. of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Beijing on May 27. It is expected that assistance from China would be airlifted to Sri Lanka soon. Meanwhile, Dr. Thomas Cheung who has been Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Hong Kong for the past 17 years has sent a personal contribution of US$. 10,000 to the Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing for flood relief work. |
