Hunas Falls Hotel increases turnover by 24% to Rs. 41.4 m

Hunas Falls Hotel has increased its turnover by 24% to Rs 41.4 million for the financial year ended March 31, 2003, as against Rs. 33.4 million last year.

The profit before tax increased to Rs. 3.5 million as against the previous year's loss of Rs. 0.8 million, Chairman Sunil Mendis said in the Annual Report 2002/03. The board has decided to recommend a first and final dividend of 3% on the ordinary share capital of the company.

Mendis said that plans are under way to further upgrade the hotel within the next two years in order to reposition the property to attract a larger number of 'high-end' tourists to obtain a better yield.

"With the possibility of air seat capacity improving during the forthcoming winter season and prospects of achieving permanent peace in the country, it is expected that the tourism industry will be on an upswing.

Hunas Falls is owned by Hayleys Group and managed and marketed by Jetwing Hotels.

The hotel is being marketed as an 'eco-friendly hotel' and is continuously focused on environmental friendly activities. "Nature walks around the hotel are now proving popular with guests who have the opportunity to study endemic birds, butterflies and dragonflies. The hotel also created a 'Dragonfly Sanctuary' possibly the first time a wetland has been created in Sri Lanka with the specific purpose of raising 'awareness' about Dragonflies.

In addition to foreign clientele, there has been regular patronage of the hotel by Sri Lankans. In order to increase mid-week occupancy, the hotel was marketed to Overseas Tour Operators as a multiple night destination.
