Tata targets over $ 80 million business this year in Lanka

Tata International Limited of India has been extending their business to Sri Lanka steadily and last year they had trade links with Sri Lanka to the value of US $ 80 million. Managing Director Tata International, Sudhir Deoras said yesterday that the company hopes that this amount would increase by a big margin by the end of this year.

He said that their main area of business in Sri Lanka was in steel trading and Automobiles. "We have also supplied vehicles to the Sri Lanka Police and even for Parliament MPs and this year too our automobile sector would expand."

He said that the company is hoping to introduce their latest car, INDICA to the Sri Lanka market soon. "We launched this vehicle three years ago and now the company is planning to market in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom as well."

Deoras said that since the introduction of this car three years ago they have sold over 300,000 cars in India.

He said that Tata international will also invest to refurbish their three hotels Taj Samudra, Taj Exotica and Airport Garden hotel to international standards this year.

He said that their company chairman Ratan Tata, was in Sri Lanka last month and had a series of discussions with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on would be investments in Sri Lanka. "The ongoing peace process was the main reason for his visit to Sri Lanka. Our investment plans to Sri Lanka would be announced soon."

He said that they are hoping to introduce value addition to their steel suppliers for the Sri Lankan engineering industry and also hope to get involved in the wire manufacturing industry. The Managing Director added that they also hope to get involved in the Fertilizer and the Chemical sector. "However we are not looking at major investments in these two areas," he said.
