Heatwave in southern India kills 50 HYDERABAD, India, Wednesday (AFP) A scorching heatwave with temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) has killed at least 50 people in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, officials said Wednesday. The deaths from sunstroke occured over the past three days, state health officials said, with 27 people dying on Tuesday alone. The worst hit were coastal areas, including the district of Visakhapatnam, 600 kilometres (370 miles) northeast of the state capital Hyderabad, where temperatures have been hovering at least 4 degrees Celsius above normal at close to 50 degrees Celsius. "The heatwave is being caused by dry, hot northerly winds blowing across the state," C.V.V. Bhadram, director at the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre told AFP. "These severe heatwave conditions will continue over the next 48 hours," he said. |
