Thomians-Joes clash in Milo League opener

by Chris Dhambarage

S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia and St. Joseph's College will come out for the first time when they clash in their Milo inter schools rugby encounter at Longden Place tomorrow.

This game has great importance for both teams because the match is also being played for the Lady Jayatilleke Shield.

Not only that this is also the first major schools rugby encounter in the Milo League tournament which is conducted this year on a different format.

The Lady Jayatilleke Shield was donated by the late Lucian Jayatilleke of St. Joseph's College a reputed lawyer in memory of his mother Evelin Jayatilleke in the year 1965.

The Thomians had the honour of winning the Shield in the inaugural year. But in 1966 St. Joseph's College captained by Rohan Jayatilleke a grandson of Lady Jayatilleke, defeated S. Thomas' College 8-3.

In 1969 the two teams figured in what was considered as the most exciting encounter of the series where the match ended in a 11 all draw.

And quite strangely it was another grandson of Lady Jayatilleke, Priyan Jayatilleke who played a vital role by firing across a last minute penalty for St. Joseph's to level the scores.

In the latter stages of the series S. Thomas' College have dominated the scene and this year too they seem to have the edge over their opponents. St. Joseph's recorded their last win in the year 2000 and the Thomians are hoping to retain the Shield for the third successive year. Last year S. Thomas' recorded a hard fought 13-8 victory.
